Brown Political Review (2021-2023)

Layout designs for Brown Political Review, a student-run magazine that aims to educate a diverse public on current political, social, and economic issues.

As the Design Director for Brown Political Review, I led a team of designers to select typefaces, create infographics, and creatively layout the magazine. As a collaborative team, both the Design Directors and Graphic Designers conceived the magazine’s layout, aesthetic, and design.

The Chicks: Complete Lyrics (2023)

Lyric book showcasing the music of The Chicks, covering their discography from the 1998 album "Wide Open Spaces" to their latest release in 2020 "Gaslighter."

The title and song titles are presented in a Western-style font, French Clarendon by Wood Type Revival, accompanied by a softer serif font, Calson, for a comfortable reading experience. On pink paper, I printed images featuring The Chicks over the years, along with iconography representing both country music and their homestate of Texas.

Gérard Uféras (2023)

Art book design that features the photography of Gérard Uféras. Starting with 100 of Uféras’ photographs, I was tasked with editing them down and pairing them to form visually and thematically cohesive spreads.

The Pool House (2023)

Risograph-printed publication for my short story, “The Pool House”. In this story, a man acquires a collection of mannequins, stashing them away in the pool house to keep them from his wife and son.

Using light blue-tinted paper, resembling light reflecting in water, I printed monochrome text and images in one blue shade on the Riso printer. To match the imagery of the story, I collected a variety of photographs, ranging from contemporary photographers to vintage fashion ads.

FEASTING: A Gathering Publication (2023)

Part of a collective publication to make work by gathering, inspired by Mindy Seu’s “On Gathering”

In our publication, my partner and I curated an assortment of texts, art, and photos related to the communal aspect of food, including images from our shared meals with friends and family and incorporating quotes from articles like Louise O. Fresco’s “Why We Eat Together”and R.I.M. Dunbar’s study on the social functions of eating, “Breaking Bread”. We printed our spreads using the Riso machine, with red ink on purple paper.

Family Tradition (2022)

Scrapbook-style visual essay titled “Family Tradition,” created with family photos, collected memorabilia, and my own “doodle” illustrations.

In this essay, I explore my family’s connection with country music. The main subject of my essay is my grandfather, “Pap”, a self-taught musician who has roots growing up in rural Pennsylvania. I created illustrations to capture his family’s love of music and country music influences.

ping pong (2022)

Collection of short stories that I wrote in a fiction writing workshop at Brown University. The class was an exploration of very short fiction, which led me to write stories ranging from one or two pages to just a couple of sentences.

To cater to short form stories, I designed a physical book with spiral binding, encouraging readers to tear out and keep their favorite stories. Inspired by my professor’s elongated notebook, I fashioned the book to be of similar size and designed the cover to resemble a ping pong table.

The book’s interior design was kept minimal with a blue color scheme and a complementary serif and sans serif font pairing, inspired by my favorite poetry books.

Clockwork (2022)

Serif text typeface using RoboFont.

Clockwork draws inspiration from Nadsat, the slang used by teenage gang members in Anthony Burgess’ novel, A Clockwork Orange. The peculiarities of Clockwork, such as its short ascenders and square serifs, capture the patchwork nature of this odd language.

As part of a type design course, we were tasked with presenting our typefaces in a print type specimen book. I designed the cover, which was later embossed on black paper. The inside of the book was used to display our typefaces, featuring passages from the novel and playful typography compositions.

Sand in the Gears (2021)

Print publication for Ingrid Barrington’s “Sand in the Gears”, an essay that deals critically with how the technology and tools we use in our everyday lives impact climate change and capitalism.

To capture the author’s process of grinding down an iPhone, I slowly broke down the essay, creating space between the text blocks. I also incorporated Barrington’s original images from her Are.na channel as halftone images to mimic sand particles.

Later, I translated this print publication into a desktop web version. Check out the website prototype on Figma.
